Germany’s Olympic Sports Confederation has just recommended Hamburg as the country’s sole representative for the 2024 Olympics. STRING very excited that member state Hamburg is in the run for the upcoming bidding process for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Germany’s Olympic Sports Confederation has decided to recommend Hamburg as Germany’s candidate city for the 2024 Olympics. Hamburg presented a high class Olympic concept resulting in the Northern German city to run with the nomination in front of capital city Berlin.

Deutsche Welle quotes Alfons Hörmann, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB):

“Hamburg has presented a fascinating and compact Olympic concept. It will help Hamburg grow as a north German – as a north European – metropolis.”

STRING vision

The STRING Network is very pleased on behalf of its member state Hamburg. The possibility of the 2024 Summer Olympics coincides with the opening of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link. This opens for a historical opportunity to market Europe’s new growth corridor from Hamburg in the south to Scania in Sweden in the north including the growth engines of the cities Hamburg, Copenhagen and Malmö.

STRING’s chairman Henrik Appel, (Copenhagen Council) wished to congratulate his colleagues in Hamburg and is also happy for the whole STRING Geography:

“This nomination is a strong sign of Hamburg’s status as a metropolis in its own right. Not only a metropolis in Germany, but also a metropolis in the whole of Northern Europe. As 2024 is the year of the Olympics, it also seems to be the year when the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link will open. This is perfect timing. Because with the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link the cities of Copenhagen, Malmö and Hamburg will be tied even closer together, enabling interaction of knowledge, trade, cultural ties and overall growth in the STRING corridor from Scania in Southern Sweden to Hamburg. It will be an outstanding chance to boost the new  sustainable growth corridor in Northern Europe.”

Hamburg ‘honored’

According to Deutsche Welle, Hamburg’s mayor, Olaf Scholz, said that the nomination was “a very, very great honor.”

“We believe that for Hamburg, for Germany, and for everyone who loves sport, this will be a big deal,” Scholz told reporters, after the announcement.

The host city of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be announced by the International Olympic Committee in Lima, Peru in the summer of 2017.
