Eliminating bottlenecks: The Fehmarnsound Fixed Link planned as a tunnel

Apr 3, 2020 | ENG

An optimal solution for the new crossing of Fehmarnsound between the island of Fehmarn and the German mainland has been found. This means another step towards elimination of bottlenecks on the Hamburg – Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link – Copenhagen stretch.

The German Federal Ministry of Transport, the State of Schleswig-Holstein and Deutsche Bahn have decided on an immersed tunnel for road and rail under the Fehmarnsound.

The existing Fehmarnsound Bridge (“Der Bügel” / The Bow) is a listed building and will be preserved for pedestrians, cyclists and slow road traffic, Deutsche Bahn Press Service announced in the beginning of March 2020.

“In a comprehensive comparison of the conceivable variants, the immersed tunnel has also shown itself to be a superior variant in the sensitivity analyzes, so that we have made a safe decision here. I am particularly happy about that the preferred variant which now has been decided fully is taking the wishes of the region into account. Next to that I am pleased, that the existing Fehmarnsound Bridge will be preserved as a notable and historical building,” states Enak Ferlemann, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport, in a press release from Deutsche Bahn.

“The crossing of the Fehmarnsound is a central building element for more rail traffic on a new European north-south axis. The new Sound Fixed Link is more powerful than the previous one and at the same time it preserves a tourist landmark by maintaining the Fehmarnsound Bridge,” underlines Ronald Pofalla, Deutsche Bahn Board Member for Infrastructure.

The Fehmarnsound Fixed Link is planned to be opened at the same time as the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link will be taken into operation – following the existing plans by late 2028.
